HON101 Origins of Western Values - Antiquity 4cr.
The course will investigate the origins in the worlds of the Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans of ideas and values central to western culture. Readings will be drawn from primary sources in the Jewish and Christian scriptures and from the writings of Greek and Roman philosophers, poets, and playwrights. The course will have a heavy writing component, including written responses to and reflections on the readings.
Final paper - Aristotle on Friendship
A philosophical exploration of Aristotle's thoughts on friendship and how such theories apply to the modern man's relationships.
HON 111 Modern Art and European Sources
This course explored the development of European art and literature and its impact on modern western culture. Readings included Madame Bovary, Anna Karenina, Madame De La Fayette’s The Princess of Cleves, Pere Goriot and various poems from the transcendentalist time. We wrote several papers investigating the themes of these readings, their commentary on social norms and impact on society as a whole.
Pere Goriot Paper - Feeding off of Greed
Pere Goriot tells the story of a young man (Rastignac)'s rise to societal power and reveals the state of society in 19th Century Paris. This essay follows Rastignac's social evolution and the messages such a journey sends to it's readers.
